Work on installation and painting The CreativeMindClass Blog

Aug 6, 2022

Nicole Mueller is a San Francisco-based visual artist. Her artwork includes large-scale works, murals, and installations which mimic the effect of stained glass. Driven by process these abstract paintings are saturated and constructed with layers of collage-like shapes. Her work explores the complexity of color, the state of change, the dichotomies that exist within painting, the change of the human condition, and the boundary between external and interior, and between both tangible and intangible.

My background

I'm mostly a painter who is a full-time an artist in San Francisco, California.

My background also includes painting murals, installation work, as well as doing arts administration as well as career advancement.

I took art classes at The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore in Maryland, where I resided for several years before making the move towards West Coast.

A large portion of my work and mission is co-hosting Beyond the Studio with my fellow artist Amanda Adams, a podcast which aims to improve transparency in the art world by interviewing other working contemporary artists about their career paths.

My fashion

Most of what I do is instinctual that is driven by process. abstract, extremely saturated, constructed with layers of color and colors of collage-like shapes.

I paint large-scale with light-activated glass installations that mimic the effects of stained glass as well as murals. Within this work I'm exploring dichotomies and states of flux, and the boundary between outside and inside, the tangible and intangible.

What is the secret to creating my work

I think showing up consistently to your job is crucial. For me creating a practice in the studio and setting myself goals to continue moving forward made it easier for me to prioritize my time when life gets in my way. Also, being aware of when I should step back and take a break or rest (for days or a month, or perhaps more).
