The illustrator of a book, Soosh, talks about her fairytale illustrations.

Aug 6, 2022

When I was searching for Soosh to write this piece properly, I stumbled upon her YouTube videos. If you've ever seen her work, you'll notice that it seems as if an old fairytale is reborn. By also adding her voice in the form of stories, she makes it a full-rounded magical experience by bringing the fairytale characters of her work to life. Read on, but be sure you check out the YouTube channel with a cup of hot tea and prepare yourself for a magical fairytale night.

We spoke to Soosh about her secret for capturing those small details of life every day in her artwork

"Hello, I'm Soosh. I was born and raised in the company of people. I am not a part of any country, nationality, religion, or anything else. My life is spent watching people and myself as I delve into the specifics of every aspect. It's a tricky path, I haven't chosen it deliberately and yet I'm in the path. If it's traditional art education I'm not a fan of any.

Although I am aware that there are different ways of painting and drawing that are referred to as styles, I have never given much thought as to what type of style my drawings could be able to qualify as. If I tried to come up with a word to describe it, it's a "fairytale realist" type of style. But speaking frankly, no style.

My opinion is that the most important thing, as I understand it, is to see through your heart as you do with your eyes. It might take some repetition to notice the small details, just like every other ability. The trick is to remain quiet for some time and completely present in the present moment. Take note of what you are doing. Be attentive, and not hurry.

My main focus has always been the people. Their expressions on their faces as well as their imitations and gestures, their kind acts, as well as their weaknesses - all of it is so fascinating and fascinating for me. Afterwards, it's just an issue of time, two pencils and a few watercolours to get in and bring to life those daily pictures printed on paper."
