A Brooklyn-based proprietor of a small business Carmen Ladipo, her passion for baking began at the very beginning. "I've always had a hankering for sweets for as long as I can remember," Carmen tells . "In my middle-school years, I was in classes like Home Economics, where we learned how to bake cookies. When I realized that I could sustain my craving for sweets by my own means that was the end of it."
However, it wasn't until many several years afterwards that Carmen was able to capitalize on her excitement by creating a tiny cookie-related online business as a side business. "I'd been moving into New York City, and I was trying to figure out the best ways to make new friends as an adult" Carmen says. "I was able to join the local climbing club and brought cookies to people who attended the gym, as well as climbers, which made for a great way to make friends." After having been "fervently motivated" many times to offer cookies, Carmen took advantage of the time between work to start her own food company in Brooklyn.
"It started out as just an excuse to earn money to bake cookies for my friends from the region occasionally," Carmen jokes. "But in the last five years, Carmen's Cookies has evolved into an online business that sees me delivering cookies across the country to customers and strangers alike."
We spoke with Carmen about how she prioritizes environmental and social impact of her business, and how she handles this one-woman business with all her other obligations, as well as the equipment that allow Carmen's Cookies to function effectively.
Local community development and social impacts

Carmen's offerings include a variety of flavor combinations like matcha lemon as well as her classics, like chocolate chips made of brown butter and orange clove. You only need to take a short review of the reviews to see how much pleasure these delicious cookies have brought to consumers everywhere.
From the start, the company, Carmen's Cookies is more than just selling cookies. "I think that food company owners have a responsibility towards the environment and their local communities to consider their impact in their community," Carmen says.
"There numerous factors that influence the manufacturing and distribution of food products which require attention and scrutiny to limit the damage done to the environmental environment. This is why I stay conscious of where I get my ingredients from and how their manufacturers consider their impact on the environment and social impacts." Carmen is transparent on her website regarding where she gets the ingredients she uses. The site even offers a interactive method to find out where she gets the baking chocolate she uses from.
And her commitment doesn't stop here. "It's crucial for me to come up with ways to support the ongoing efforts of food justice in the Brooklyn neighborhood," Carmen says.
"Every each year, I pick an organization that is directly with the community it serves in order to encourage development in the economy as well as sustainable food production. I give a small percentage of my profits each year to these groups since I wish for Carmen's Cookies to make an impact on the area that it chooses to call home." Customers have the option to visit the About page to learn more about the places Carmen donates a portion of the sales.
"As for"the Carmen's Cookies community," Carmen adds, "it's an inspiring experience to watch the customers unite in solidarity with various causes over many years. Facilitating the donations of hundreds of dollars for numerous national and local organizations for food justice and community groups that are marginalized through cookie sales is a significant and important event."
