Small-sized business proprietor from Brooklyn Carmen Ladipo, her passion for baking developed in the beginning. "I've been an avid lover of sweets for as long as I can remember," Carmen tells . "In my middle school years I attended a class which were similar to Home Economics, where we learnt how to bake cookies. After I realized I could keep my hunger for sweets in my own way and then the cravings were gone."

However, it wasn't until many years after that Carmen was able to earn money from that passion by creating a tiny-batch cookie online shop for a side business. "I'd just moved into New York City, and tried to recall how to make friends as an adult" Carmen says. "I had the opportunity to be a part of the local climbing group and would bring food for staff members as well as other climbers. It was a great strategy for making friends." After receiving "fervently driven" repeatedly to market her cakes Carmen used working in between to start her own food company in Brooklyn.

"It started out as just an excuse for me to earn money to bake cakes for local customers on occasion," Carmen jokes. "But over the last five years Carmen's Cookies has blossomed into an online shop that allows me to ship cookies across the nation for people who are strangers, as well as family members."

We spoke with Carmen about her methods of ensuring she has a focus on social and environmental impacts of her enterprise as well as how she handles this single-woman operation alongside other work and duties, and about the equipment that helps Carmen's Cookies to operate efficiently.

Local communities are crucial and the Social impact

In the beginning, Carmen's Cookies was about far more than just selling cookies. "I consider that food industry owners are accountable to the planet and to their communities in general to be mindful of their environmental impact" Carmen says.

"There are many materials that go into making and selling foods that require careful consideration and attention to ensure that they cause the least amount of environmental harm. To this end I take note of the source of my ingredients from, and whether their producers take into consideration their environmental and social impact." Carmen is open on her site regarding how she obtains her ingredients. You can even use an interactive method to trace where she gets her baking chocolate from.

However, her commitment doesn't end after that point. "It's crucial for me to figure out ways that I can help in efforts for ensuring fairness in food in the Brooklyn neighborhood," Carmen says.

"Every each year, I choose an organization that is directly involved with local communities for growth and economic as well as food sustainability. I donate a portion of my annual earnings to these organizations since I wish for Carmen's Cookies to make a significant impact on the community that it chooses to make its home." Customers have the option to visit the About page to learn more about the places Carmen is donating part of its profits.

"As to"the Carmen's Cookies community," Carmen adds, "it's an inspiring experience to watch our customers band together to help various causes throughout the years. Helping to make donations in the hundreds for various local and national organizations for food justice and vulnerable communities through the use of cookies is definitely a achievement."
