We're thrilled by our twenty-year history of providing an opportunity for entrepreneurs of all sizes and potential all over the world to be noticed and be successful. Marcy Lab School Marcy Lab School is a private, non-profit institution which is situated within Brooklyn, New York, which aims to provide its students with a top postsecondary education and tertiary education that can guide youngsters who are not considered to rewarding and fulfilling career opportunities in the field of technology.
That's why we made the gift of $100,000 to the Marcy Lab School as a component of our 2020 commitment to support organizations working toward the reduction of racial inequality.
We had a conversation with the Marcy Lab School's Executive Director Reuben Ogbonna II, about the ways in which the school has been capable of giving Fellows an opportunity to develop their abilities to find careers in the field of technology or other fields, regardless of regardless of having a degree.
: Marcy Lab is a quite new organisation, what made you chose to create this non-profit?
Reuben Ogbonna II: After spending 14 years serving students of color--along with my co-founder Maya Bhattacharjee-Marcantonio--in the charter and public school systems, we repeatedly watched as our former students with limitless potential slipped through the cracks of higher education. One of the things that isn't widely told about colleges in America is that each year, thousands of promising, hardworking students get admitted to the college they've always wanted to attend but will not be able to finance it or remain until. We were shocked at the low success percentage of "college promises" which left our college students and their families with life-altering debt and other seemingly unsurmountable hurdles.
In the year 2019, we joined together to create and run Marcy Lab out of the belief that children that identify as black, as well as the majority of children, deserve the opportunity to achieve a greater level of fairness and equity to the possibilities and options once only afforded for people that were in a 4-year college. Marcy Lab School Marcy Lab School offers a alternative to postsecondary schooling which has been reinvented based by our founding goal of bringing about lifelong economic flexibilities and options for students who want to enter careers in the rapidly changing technological field.
SQSP is described as an alternative to college for students. The reason why it's important for you to know that the Marcy Lab offers this path towards job?
ROThe problems I witnessed my students confront firsthand were one of the major difficulties faced by students who are from minority groups. It was clear that the postsecondary systems in our country did not live up to the expectations of colleges is what the majority of students seek: community, support, academic relevance, and ability to find not just a job but a career. It's the deliberate blend of all these aspects that make up the basis for Marcy Lab and are some essential elements that allow students with the opportunity to pursue a career path which isn't traditional.
To fulfill a new promise, we ensure the Fellows have the abilities to work in the job following our 12 month course well-prepared and ready to be part of teams that move quickly and contribute to the company right from the start. The Fellows are trained in technical proficiency by completing an industry-adjusted and trained program that is flexible and responsive to ever-changing requirements of the tech industry. In addition to gaining a strong technical skill set Our Fellows also engage with taking part in their Leadership & Development curriculum, that focuses on racial identity as well as gender equality in the context of professional development as well as financial literacy. The curriculum includes books by renowned authors like James Baldwin, Michelle Alexander, Safiya Umoja Noble, and Dr. Beverly Tatum.
We're extremely pleased to announce that Marcy Lab School graduates are searching for jobs and landing their dream jobs with salaries that were previously reserved only for students of four-year colleges with a high level of competition. This has two implications: In addition to our students and their families propelled into jobs that provide security and financial security as well, it also illustrates that companies have significantly changed their methods of hiring to draw in and retain applicants that don't fall into the traditional categories.
SQSP: What can you tell us about the impact that you've witnessed at the Marcy Lab School have on those students attending the school?
ROEven after spending five years on this project and observing the results, it's not overlooked how enthralling it would be to watch our young talent assume jobs that yield an average of $188,000 annual income for those aged 19 and 20 at several of the largest and most profitable firms around the globe, without having to take on the burden of debt. These young talents are employed by teams from firms including The New York Times, JPMorgan, Cockroach Labs, Spotify as well as others that are increasing their income approximately $75,000 over one year. It's they are also able to help their community by purchasing houses, as well as supporting small-scale family businesses and helping the families of their employees.
Yet, long before our fellows enter in the workforce and begin their journey into the workforce, we observe the change, grow and develop as people who strive to go further than they previously have to achieve their dreams and building confidence in believing that they are able to add value to the spaces they walk into. Each day, they become immersed in their pursuits and are determined to bring change outside the boundaries of Marcy and ultimately even their workplaces. In their interactions together with their instructors along with their interactions working with their peers They remain with an understanding that their talents, talents and capacities will allow people to dismantle the systems that have been the source of inequity for centuries, ultimately making use of their knowledge and experience to create strategies for the benefit of society as well as to make changes to society.
SQSP: What is the role that technology play in the overall achievement that is Marcy Lab? Marcy Lab program and its colleagues, both as expert subject matter experts as well as managing the program?
ROOur technologically-focused curriculum's success is dependent on the close partnership we have with our colleagues on the side of employers for providing a continuous feedback loop regarding our fellows skills and their readiness for professional work. Any areas of improvement that are relevant go directly to our instructors in order to make sure that our curriculum will evolve and improve so that they can meet employers' needs and also the performance on the field.
The convergence of education curriculum and the performance of students is resulting in increased hiring agreements that are negotiated with businesses who appreciate the possibility that these tight connections can lead to higher or equal hiring rates. Some of the highlights include:
In direct collaboration with established firms to reduce the requirements of degrees for software engineers. This is the case with The New York Times and . The companies have now recruited our Fellows, as well as other talent not traditional.
The creation of a new Capstone program curriculum and J.P. Morgan Chase Asset and Wealth Management and J.P. Morgan Chase Asset and Wealth Management, which is a specialist in backend technology for the capstone course that will meet their requirements and help prepare our Fellows for the constantly growing increasing use of data analytics.
SQSP What hope do you have for the future direction of Marcy Lab School?
RO:What has led me to be optimistic about the future of Marcy Lab and the potential of the space that we're currently in is the evolution that's happening in the corporate world as businesses are shifting away from the need for degrees in favor of hiring according to qualifications that create opportunities for businesses like Marcy Lab to even exist.
I've seen some of the biggest employers in the United States such as IBM and Barclays and also companies like this, where there are a lot of fresh professionals, mid-level and senior leaders that are graduates of the Marcy Lab School, much as that of the Stanford University pipeline that connects businesses within and around the San Francisco Bay Area. As they gain knowledge and skills at these prestigious corporations, I can imagine the students leaving to create their own companies and paying them back by bringing in teams from the same backgrounds as they had.
The bottom line is that I see Marcy Lab as a part in a wider fair-minded program which was designed specifically with the intention of helping many young people who are successful in schools of color into careers which can eradicate poverty in just a few generations.
SQSP: How can people who are interested in the Marcy Lab School's work become engaged?
