Teachable is an excellent course platform when it comes to recording an asynchronous course and constructing the landing page for selling the course.

However, when you think about modern learning platforms, Teachable is still missing many features. There aren't many options for live streaming as well as cohort courses, no real community options as well as limited applications (iOS only) Many Teachable users want something more robust.

If you're on the same vessel, then this article is the one for you. In this article we'll guide you through the steps to move to Teachable... and provide some suggestions for the best way to proceed.

The reasons to move away from Teachable

We talked about this in the intro. However, below are a few of the limitations Teachable users bump up against:

  • Live courses are limited to live courses
  • Community options are limited to a small number of communities.
  • Limited app access
  • An extremely clunky and unwieldy LMS
  • Limited live events

In the end, many of the people who start with Teachable get bored of the platform. They're running their classes through Teachable and running a group on Facebook organizing events on Zoom, and trying desperately to hold it all together using emails.

Modern courses platforms provide all of this and more, all in one location.

How do I migrate from Teachable

1. Figure out your needs

The limitations were discussed above. If you're considering a migration from Teachable create the list of you're not willing to compromise on.

  • What are the limitations that you're experiencing?
  • What do you want to offer but can't?

Start creating a wish list for your new system. Make sure you get your current students engaged in the process too. A poll or survey particularly using a gift card, can get you some useful feedback on what's working and what's not.

If you'd like to ask the question of how many you're likely to attract followers the path you take if you move to a new platform. If you're seeing the shortcomings of Teachable, trust your gut. The new platform gives you opportunities to grow through new avenues.

2. Pick your favorite platform

The next thing to do is decide which direction to take. That means you need to find an online learning platform that allows you to complete everything you've dreamed of doing.

Here are a few of the features you can search for:

  • The possibility of teaching live courses and/or live stream
  • A solid LMS that is ideal for asynchronous course
  • A community-based platform that includes messages, chat, and discussions as well as member profiles.
  • Virtual event capabilities to add items like office hours, group coaching
  • Flexible to modify the look to match your company's image

Here are some options you can consider instead of Teachable

  • Mighty - We've got a well-built course platform that is well for recorded or group courses. Plus a best-in-class community-based platform that is built in, including live streaming events, live stream and member profiles and discussions forums, chat and messaging. It's also a great app for EVERY device. Get started with Your Free Trial
  • Thinkific is a great option for creators who like the static nature of Teachable for pre-recorded courses, Thinkific offers a good replacement. It is a fantastic LMS that includes some great courses marketing tools, but it is restricted to live classes or events, as well as communities.
  • Kajabi is a good choice. Kajabi is another option for a totally asynchronous course. It's a reliable LMS with a really good marketing platform attached to it to create landing pages, incorporate email, and up and down-sell. Similar to Thinkific, Kajabi is limited in terms of live events and cohort courses. It's also the most expensive alternative on this list.

3. Transfer content

Once you've set up your account using the new platform it is possible to determine the things you'd like to move to the new space and then decide what you want to keep.

Many those who are migrating an online course or community choose to upload an existing recorded course, or downloads. If you only import the resources from your current Teachable account this is a fast and straightforward way of integrating the new platform.

You could also choose to add additional goodies and this could coincide with the things we'll discuss below in getting the current members of your group happy about making the switch.

4. Invite your members

Invite your members who are currently on the list!

If someone has bought an Teachable course providing them with a link to register on the new platform is easy. Be sure to inform them that they'll gain access to more courses and extra value from moving.

5. Create a launch event

When it comes to migrating from Teachable the nuts and bolts of a new platform are pretty easy. It's not necessary to think about that too much.

The most important thing is to inspire people to get them excited about the new location. And what better way than to organize a launch celebration?

Faux Brands - EventSeries

The idea of hosting a launch event in the new platform brings people together as well as gives them a reason to register and login. It helps make the transition more seamless than sending an email to inform people that "the course is now live on a new platform. "

This new platform is a way to overcome the shortcomings of Teachable. Therefore, be creative with how you use it!

These are ideas to consider for an event to launch :

  • A specific speaker series
  • Instructing a part or all of the courses live
  • Discussions or lessons
  • informal events such as networking sessions or game nights
  • An HTML0 mastermind session

It is important to let your staff know about any additional goodies that your members can expect from your brand new location. These are some great options:

  • office hours
  • Daily Q&A's
  • Feedback on projects is possible (from you and other members)
  • The chance to get to know similar-minded individuals
  • Built-in accountability

6. Close your Teachable account

This is an important step, so we need to say it. If you want to encourage people to move to your platform, you need to shut down your Teachable account.

If you keep it indefinitely open, users don't need to be enticed to change. And DEFINITELY do not keep re-posting on Teachable and your new platform. If you wish your transition to go smoothly it is time to pull the plug at an appropriate time.

Offer your students a grace period. Allow them to make the transition. But set a deadline, and follow through with it.

7. Stay in contact with missing members

If you notice that your members are lost in migration, and it can happen, don't fret about it too much. This is common. It is possible that they have received the results they expected from your class through Teachable and want to disconnect right now.

Keep in contact with your contacts. Let them know what's going on in your new space by email and continue providing them with opportunities to meet.

8. Start growing!

Chances are, one of the reasons for going away from Teachable was access to greater growth. Get ready to expand your student base!

You can develop marketing materials to promote your move, provide admission tickets or memberships for launch events, or offer discounts to bring new customers in the door.

Be sure to use the old content for your benefit, particularly for selling points. For example, you might choose to teach a completely fresh course in person. However, you could offer your previous course as a "bonus." Absolutely awesome.

Learn ways to expand your community of students and tap to it!
