Honoring History, Empowering Progress: International Women's Day 2024
Each year, on the 8th of March everyone gathers for the celebration of International Women's Day (IWD). This day is a time to celebrate the incredible achievements of women, reflect on the challenges they still face as well as recommit to ensuring that equality truly reigns. As we look back, it wasn't a day that grew overnight. It's the culmination of years of struggle, resilience and unwavering commitment. Today, we honor this day and encourage everyone to join us as we go on an enlightening journey through the history and culture of IWD, a testament to the ongoing power of collective action.
From Seeds of Change to a Global Movement
The seeds for IWD began to germinate at the beginning of the 20th century. This was the time when the fight for women's rights was gaining momentum. On the 8th of March of 1857, a group of women were on strike to protest the inadequate working conditions, as well as subpar rights for women in their textile industry. The strike demanded a shorter work day as well as fair and reasonable living wage. A few years later, on March 8, a march by women working in the needle trades took place to protest child labor, sweatshop working conditions, and to demand that women be able to vote. A year later, in 1910 the 8th of March was made a day to be celebrated to be International Women's Day.
A catalyst for change
Through the 20th century IWD was a powerful catalyst for change. It became a platform for women to raise their voices on issues like voting rights, fair working conditions, pay and the right to access education. In 1975 IWD was recognized by the United Nations officially recognized IWD, solidifying its global significance.
A Day of Celebration and Action
Today, IWD is celebrated in numerous ways, from breathtaking marches to intimate gatherings. It's an opportunity to honor the pioneering women of every profession, from scientists and artists to entrepreneurs and activists. However, IWD isn't only about celebrating, it's also an invitation to the action. It highlights that the struggle to achieve gender equality remains far from being over. It is imperative to continue to fight for equality in opportunities, confront damaging stereotypes, and support women and girls everywhere. The theme for International Women's Day 2024 is " Invest in Women and Accelerating Change" with the globally popular hashtag #InvestInWomen..
According to the UN the UN, these five categories are crucial to moving ahead this hashtag until it becomes outdated:
- Investing in women, one of the human rights issues:Time is running out. Equal gender representation is the biggest human rights problem, affecting all.
- Stopping poverty Because of the COVID outbreak and the conflict in the region over the last 75 million people are living in extreme in poverty as of 2020. Action is urgently needed for preventing more than 342 million women and girls living in poverty in 2030.
- Implementing gender-responsive financing: Conflicts and rising prices could force 75% of nations to cut public spending by 2025, negatively impacting women as well as their most essential services.
- Moving to a more green economy and care society:The economy currently disproportionately affects women. Proponents of a change to green economies and a care society to amplify women's voices.
- Supporting feminist change-makers: Despite leading efforts, feminist organizations receive only 0.13 percent of the official development assistance.
