about pursuing challenges and changing creative career direction

Before I moved to London in the year 2017, I was in a tiny town in Germany and worked in the field of After Effects animator. While there weren't many challenges to my creativity and my abilities slowed down quickly and I became really annoyed.

Moving into London and getting acquainted with all the wonderful animation folks here gave me a huge boost. I felt like "Damn, I'm running with the cool kids . I've better start putting on my best."

Following my visit to the 2019 Pictoplasma Conference, I decided to enter the universe of interesting character creators. It was clear quickly that my characters work most effectively when they're in 3D and I'm learning by doing and it's hard, but also very rewarding!

My work caught the attention of Greenhouse Animation, which is now representing me as a director by them.

About the X-Files project as well as the mystery of socks disappearing

One of the very first clients I worked on with my brand new-found style is the Covered by Lemonade clip.

Lemonade Insurance approached me to create a work to accompany its ongoing Instagram collaborative with artists. As the business is an insurer of content and the concept of adorable household items that are in danger popped into my head. That's how the X-Files concept came to fruition.

I spent the last winter lockdown watching all the x-files, so involving an alien abduction of the classic kind seemed obvious. The problem was that all characters had to remain in the same location to be in the same spot in order to stop the animation loop in order for them to be actually abducted. This was when I came up with thought of making the washing machine open and the one pink sock move up to the UFO.

While creating the UFO as well as giving it little legs, I saw the way everything can get sucked into. The UFO has lost its socks and is working to retrieve it!

I find that creating a good story works best by combining diverse things that may seem incompatible initially. In order to make something surprising take place and also to give inanimate objects a personality by sticking humorous faces on their surfaces is what's most enjoyable to me!

 Information about the animation workflow

My work process starts with sketches of characters, and then an outline of the story. I turned the animatic to Lemonade to convey the concept as well as the time. From there, I go into Cinema 4D and model all my characters. This is also where I test out the materials I use and create style frames.

Once the animation in Cinema 4D is done, I move to After effects for the compositing process and finalization. The pink light beam, for instance, is created with After Effects.

Concerning the sound effects and working in conjunction with Phill Brookes

This was the first time I worked on with sound designer, Philip Brookes who really rocked it! His contribution elevates the footage up to a new level and ties everything together perfectly! It was an amazing task to complete and I'm hoping to make many more like it!

We've had a conversation with Phil about his process for making sounds to be used in his X-Files project. Check out the interview by Phil Brookes.

Right now, I'm learning more methods for character rigging, as well as how to create beautiful textures with Cinema 4D and Redshift. I'm experimenting with the combination of 2D and 3D animation, and I'm excited to see what direction my journey into character design will take me in the future!

Tips for artists for changing your career path

Some tips I can give for anyone looking to switch directions:

  1. Find which technique suits your needs best and learn about it! Moving design is a process that feels like you're required to learn all there is. It's just not feasible.
  2. You should take your strangeness seriously and do not minimize it. Your peculiarity is distinctive. Your artistic voice is unique.
  3. Accept your thoughts. Whatever is taking place in your head accept it, and then make your own!
