Artist Vlog - Riso Chan
Riso Chan talks about acceptance of her true self through artwork:
My work is very emotionally charged. I make portraits of myself depicting the feelings me feel. I was always a very sensitive and sensitive person. While I was a kid, there was something that caused me to feel uncomfortable and I attempted to ignore the issue. (...) When you get old enough and realize there is no one else like you and that everybody experiences things differently. I chose to take advantage of the emotions I bring to my everyday day life to begin painting. Drawing on it helps inspire my imagination and spark fresh ideas. That is amazing because the thing I had been trying to push down for all of my life only to suddenly I put it down on sheet of paper and it felt like a great release. There is finally an area that I can utilize this feeling and utilize these feelings, hurts, and joys and write them down. It felt really awesome that it connected me to my home where I was content. The experience began to resonate with lots of others. It was then that I started to consider putting ideas on paper that I never thought of previously. Instead of trying to look similar to previous artists who "made it" I listened to the ideas I was trying to say and to what I wanted to portray as a person. I accepted something I did not love about myself and realized that it was in fact my strongest strengths. I'm very happy to be the most sensitive me.
